TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — One person was killed, and another was seriously injured after a wrong-way driver reportedly caused a head-on crash in Tampa early Saturday morning.

The crash happened around 2:52 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the eastbound lanes of Selmon Expressway, according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a 40-year-old Bartow woman driving a Honda FIT got onto the expressway in the wrong direction, heading west in the eastbound lanes.

As of Saturday afternoon, officials still did not know where the woman got onto the expressway, nor how she began traveling in the wrong direction.

A 33-year-old Orlando man was reportedly traveling east in a Toyota Yaris when the two vehicles collided head-on near milepost 6 in Downtown Tampa.

Officials said the force from the collision caused both vehicles to rotate, sending the Toyota Yaris into a concrete barrier wall. The woman’s Honda FIT came to a stop in the middle of the road.

The 33-year-old Orlando man was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. The 40-year-old Bartow woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The crash was still under investigation Saturday afternoon. No further information was immediately available.
